This paper provides an overview of challenges in big data analysis, and the possibilities of applying swarm intelligence algorithms to large scale problems. Two possible applications are given, intelligent transportation systems and wireless sensor networks, which both require algorithms that can respond to dynamical changing data.

Swarm intelligence algorithms are population-based, with each individual in the population representing "a potential solution of the problem being optimized". The population as a whole will tend towards greater and greater solution optimization as the individuals collaborate and compete across iteration cycles.

For further investigation, two algorithms were referenced: ant colony optimization (ACO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO)
